He surfed for the Hawaiian Airlines' Duke's OceanFest Surf Legend Contest with the guys in this photo. The 2007 Outrigger Waikiki Hotel Surf Team Members are, from right, Paul Drewes, Ben Aipa (the legendary surfer), Hugh O'Reilly, Wes Chong and Sig Zane.

Aloha Everyone!
Hope you had a fun weekend.
There were lots going on in town!
We were blessed with a beautiful Sunday yesterday (Hawai`i time), as you can see from this photo taken from Onekahakaha Beach Park.

皆様へ、アロ～ハ！
良い週末を過ごされましたか？こちらは色々なイベント目白押しでした！昨日(ハワイ時間)は素晴しいお天気に恵まれた日曜日となりヒロのオネカハカハ・ビーチからはこんなに素晴しい景色が見れました！

On Saturday, I was at the Hilo store, and this is a typical early morning scene in front of the store. Our concierges Emery, Brandy (our website model) and George, taking care of the store front sweeping the Kukui leaves off the ground. Mahalo for making it nani (pretty) gang!

土曜日はヒロ店に珍しく出勤いたしました。開店前は毎朝ヒロ店のスタッフ(左からエモリー、当社ウェブサイトのモデルでもあるブランディー、そしてジョージ)がお店の前のククイの木の枯葉をお掃除しています。毎朝ご苦労様♪

The big event on Saturday was the Aloha Festival Investiture at Halemaumau Crater, Volcano National Park. This is always an exciting event for tourists as well as the locals, since we get to see the Royal Court, plus Halau O Kekuhi dance!
As usual, they were awesome... see it for yourself!






そして土曜日の目玉イベントはヴォルケーノ国立公園内にあるハレマウマウ・クレーターで行われたアロハ・フェスティバルの任官式。一番エクサイティングなのは毎年恒例となっているハラウ・オ・ケクヒによる奉納の踊り。本家本元の踊り(ハラウ・オ・ケクヒはクム・プアラニ・カナヘレ及びナラニ・カナカオレ率いる7世代により伝わるペレへの踊りを伝承されているいわゆるお家元のハラウです)、ということで地元はもちろん観光客の方々の注目を浴びていました。迫力満載の踊りに全員圧倒され、ペレの麓に居ることを肌で実感することが出来ましたよ！

Pareus & New Linen Mananae Blouses!

Ready for a beautiful weekend?
Hope so, because here in Hilo, it's looking very nice!
Tomorrow at noon, Saturday August 25th, the Aloha Festival gets a kick start with the Royal Court Investiture at Volcanoes National Park, and Halau O Kekuhi will be performing as well. That should be an exciting event to attned during the day!
The last of the Bon Dance is also happening tomorrow evening at Pahoa Hongwanji Fukyojo, 8 p.m., so make sure not to miss the last chance to get your dancing feet going...

ビューティフルな週末をお過ごしですか?
ここハワイ島ヒロでは今日は特に快晴の素晴しい日となりました。今週末はアロハ・フェスティバルが始まります!ヴォルケーノ国立公園のハレマウマウ火口で8月25日午後12時から儀式が始まり、ハラウ・オ・ケクヒも踊りを奉納しますのでのでお見逃しなく。
更に土曜日の夜にはこれで今シーズン最後となる盆踊りがパホアで開催されますよ～！今年は結構子供達とかなり各地のローカル色強い「ボンダンス」巡りをしてきましたのでこれで踊り収めです♪パホアの本願寺で8時にではお会いしましょう！

Outrigger & Sig Zane!

If you happen to be in Waikiki this week, there's an event you must go to! That's the Duke's OceanFest, which is being held in conjunction with the 117th anniversary of Duke Kahanamoku’s birthday (Aug. 24, 1890).

Sig is going to be surfing with the Outrigger Waikiki Hotel's surf legend team! Go Sig, Go Outrigger!
And while we're on the topic, Sig and his son Kuha`o has unveiled an exclusive design for the Outrigger Reef Hotel's employee uniform! What you see printed on this beautiful koa wood canoe paddle, is the design that they presented. "The exclusive design, presented in `ohe kapala format, was named Kekaulai`o, or The Significant Chord.This art reflected a journey through time, illustrating the past years of the company, the present, and the future".

今週ワイキキへいらっしゃる方、サーフィンが大好きな方へ面白いイベントのお知らせです。デュークス・オーシャンフェスト、と名乗ったデューク・カフモクの生誕117周年(1890年8月24日)を記念したイベントです。シグ・ゼーン・デザインズを代表して社長のシグがアウトリガー・ワイキキ・ホテルのサーフィンチームに参加することになりました！ 見かけたら応援してやってくださいね～!

ところでこのコアウッドでできたカヌー用のオールに描かれている模様はなんだと思いますか？実はアウトリガー・リーフ・ホテルの従業員用のユニフォームの専用デザインとしてシグと息子のクハオが描いた作品なのです！竹印、又はオヘ・カパラ、というハワイ古来の手法を使用し、デザインには「過去、現在、未来への気持ちが込められている」、ということでその名も「ケカウライオ・重要な弦」という意味の名前が命名されました。私もまだユニフォームになったこのプリントを見ていないのでどんな出来上がりになったのか見るのが楽しみです！

And this beauty of a surfboard is the one that was created especially for the Duke's OceanFest Charity Auction. I don't surf but I wouldn't mind owning a board like this! The board shaper is Jeff Hunt who lives in Pahoa, Big Island.

How was your weekend? Hope it was a good one! What's new in the store? Here's one of our newest Hala`i tops, modeled by our Hilo concierge, Brandy. There's a new print called Pa Hoaka (see below) and it's a beautiful rendition of the wauke leaf. There are lots of new men's aloha shirts too, so come by the stores or check-out the website!

ヒロは毎日とっても暑い日が続いていましたが、今日は近づいている台風の影響でしょうか、少し雨が降って気温が下がり自然のクーラーに感謝の日となりました！
さあ、こんな暑い日はやはりこの新作で決まり?!　ハライ、というスタイルの新しいプリントが入荷しましたので早速店員のブラディーちゃんにモデルをしていただきました。男性用のアロハシャツも続々新作が入荷しているのでどうぞお店又はウェブサイトへ遊びにいらしてください♪









These beautiful art work displays are made by Nalani Kanaka`ole and her students from her summer school class. They are made from coconut shells and kukui nuts. They are candlestick objet d'art...
Back in the days, kukui nut oil was the source for lighting... an ingenious art work indeed, utilizing local and native materilas.

さてこちらは今ヒロ店のウィンドウにディスプレイされているオブジェです。ナラニ・カナカオレ先生が夏期講習のクラスで生徒と作ったプロジェクト。椰子の実とその皮、それにククイナッツを使用した物で、一昔前はククイナッツから取れる油が明かりの代わりでしたのでこちら、なんと蝋燭台なんです！
ネイティブ、そしてローカルな素材から作られたアートを御堪能ください♪

Surf's Up! Duke's OceanFest Coming Up!

Lots of exciting things going on around here.

One of it is the 6th Annual Duke’s OceanFest, which is happening August 18-26, 2007, on Waikiki Beach, just front of the Outrigger Waikiki On the Beach Hotel.

And guess who is going to be participating with his own uniquely designed surfboard (see photo)?

You guessed it right, Sig Zane is going to be out there paddling along with one of the famed legend surfers, Wayne Lynch, and others. And if that's not news enough, he is going to have one of a kind Sig Zane Designs' surfboard out for Surf Auction! That, I would say would be a rare get...

こちらヒロは今日もとっても日差しが強く暑いです！日本も猛暑続きのようですが、皆様いかがお過ごしでしょうか？

さて、今日はオアフ島、ワイキキで今度8月18日～26日の間に行われるイベントのお知らせです。第6回になる恒例のデュークス・オーシャンフェストがワイキキ・ビーチにて開催されるのですが、なんとこのイベントにサーファーとしてシグ・ゼーンが参加するのです。しかもこの写真の特注シグ・サーフボードを持参して！この大会には伝説のサーファーとして名高いウェイン・リンチも参加する予定で彼の大ファンであるシグはかなりわくわく状態みたいです。シグ特注の別のサーフボードはオークションに出される予定なので興味のある方は是非ご参加を！

Back from the Land of the Rising Sun...

How have you been?
Just got back from a two week visit to Japan.
My visit was divided between my hometown in Kamakura and Tokyo, so a nice combination of slow and fast life!
It was very humid and hot as usual, so even doggies were out surfin' (see photo)!
A perfect way to end the day was to go out to the beach, and play with sand...





お久しぶりですがお元気でしたか？
夏休みも兼ねて日本に行ってきました。あ～忙しかった…と、いうのが素直な感想。実家のある鎌倉と東京を行ったり来たり。子供達の夏休みも兼ねているのでファミリーサービスの時間も捻出し、結局あっという間の2週間。今回の印象は、とにかく日本は常に進化・変化している！？ヒロから比べると著しくそんなことを感じてしまいます♪
ちょっとのんびりペースになりたい時はやはりビーチでしょう！こちら材木座海岸ではワンちゃんがサーフィンをしていたり夕暮れ時ののんびりタイムでした。








Yokohama Hawaii Festival was also going on while I was there and boy, was there a lot of people! At the Big Island Visitor's Bureau Booth, Moku O Keawe International Festival was represented by the artist Kathy Long and her husband Bertil, who is the chairman of the board. This year, for the Opening Night Ceremony Concert, Keali`i Reichel is going to be performing on November 7, Wednesday night @ 7pm at the Waikoloa Beach Resort, so don't miss out on this opportunity!

今年もヨコハマ・ハワイ・フェスティバル、盛り上がっていましたね～!時間の都合上ほんの30分程度しか居られなくて残念でしたが、ハワイ島観光局のブースにて御挨拶してきました。こちらは今年11月に開催されるモク・オ・キアヴェ・インターナショナル・フェスティバルのブースを代表してアーティストのキャシー・ロングと実行委員会会長のバートル・ロング夫妻。キャシーさんの絵はハワイ好きな人であれば必ずどこかで目にしているはず…とっても素敵なご夫妻です。今年の前夜祭にはなんとあのケアリイ・ライシェルがコンサート出演いたします！11月7日、19時からワイコロアビーチリゾートにて行われますのでお見逃し無く！

Also at the booth was my friend, Jin, of Hilo Homemade Ice Cream. A perfect place to promote the delicious ice cream... Mahalo for the yummy ice cream Jin!

こちらはヒロ・ホームメード・アイスクリームのジンさん。暑い大桟橋ホール内にぴったりの商品でした～!!ジンさん、お久しぶりでした!そして美味しいアイスクリーム、マハロございました～!



Tokyo is always full of surprises!
Here was a tiny tiny little car in middle of Ginza! Now, how cute is that?!

この車、東京の銀座マリオンの交差点すぐ近くで見たのですが珍しくて思わず写真を撮ってしまいました！
一人で用を足すにはこれくらいで十分ですよね～!

そして｢オヤジ｣の街、新橋の飲み屋街…かなり盛り上がっていましたよ～!美味しそうなお店がたくさん並び、どれも人で一杯でした！
