Sig Zane and Lei Puakenikeni

Aloha to All!

I went to Big Island Candies today to get some Hilo made omiyage (souvenirs) and look what they had in their entrance hall display...
Our Sig Zane designed Lei Puakenikeni Gift Boxes that they had collaborated together!
It was such a beautiful display that I had to take a picture!
Of the content, I like the biscotti, but also their brownies... mmm... Please try them 'cos you'll know what I mean!

今日ヒロのお土産を買う為にビッグアイランドキャンディーズに立ち寄ったのですが、なんとシグ・ゼーンとビッグアイランドキャンディーズとがコラボしたレイ・プアケニケニ・ギフトボックスのディスプレイが…　とっても素敵だったので思わず写真を撮らせていただきました♪

このボックスの中身で私が好きなのはビスコッティもそうですがブラウニー。甘党ではないのですが、何故かこれは遠慮無くいただいちゃいます。是非お試しください。

And here's the man himself, Sig Zane, looking very "nani" (pretty) with his color coordinated lei! Mahalo nui loa Sig, for all the wonderful designs that you adorn us with!

Bon Chance, Bon Dance!

Hope your weekend was an exciting one!
Here in Hilo, it was hot and beautiful. Summer has surely arrived!
So had to go to the favorite beach spot to cool off the heat...

お元気ですか～！？良い週末を過ごされましたか？こちらヒロは良い天気に恵まれ毎日夏真っ盛り、といった感じです。そんな日々はやはり海、に限りますよね！ということで先週末はお気に入りのビーチで涼んできました…



And when cool evening arrived, I decided to check out the local bon dance situation at the Hilo Meishoin.
It's a traditional way to celebrate the o-bon period (usually in August) in Japan. It was a very pleasant surprise to see so many local people enjoying this traditional way of honoring and paying respect to your ancestors. And there were many great dancers too! A "home away from home" kinda feeling, if you know what I mean.
Here's a site where you can see the Big Island Bon Dance Schedule. It's happening throughout July and August, so if you get into the dancing, you can dance your way through the summer, almost every weekend!
This particular event was sponsored by Suisan, who is celebrating their 100th year anniversary. Wow!





そして夜はこの時期から始まる地元の｢盆踊り大会」に行くことになりました！ヒロではすっかり馴染みのある盆踊り、今週末はヒロ明照院での大会。そこにはたくさんの老若男女のボン・ダンス・ファンが集合していました！なんだか日本にいるより盆踊りの文化が継承され、しかもかなり盛り上がっていることに感動。と～っても踊りの上手な方々が大勢いるので(特にこのお兄さん)ひとしきり感心したりで楽しんじゃいました！ハワイ島の盆踊りのスケジュールは→こちら。そして今回のイベントは今年創業100年を迎えたいわずと知れたローカル漁業会社、スイサンがスポンサー、ということでこんな手ぬぐいとうちわをいただきました♪

18th Annual Hawaiian Music Festival!

Before I get into my topic, I'd like to first of all mahalo all of you who stopped by at our website sale. It was a thrilling three day sale and we had a blast! Thank you!

Here's an update on what's hot and happening (in my terms!) in Hilo Town...

Keep your calendar open for July 21 & 22 for the 18th Annual Hawaiian Music Festival at Hilo High Auditorium! This event is what brought me from Kamakura to Hilo in the first place, because I love Hawaiian Slackkey music, and this is a perfect place to just drench yourself in excellent Hawaiian music, all day.

You may have noticed that lehua flower looking very familiar...? Well, you've got a good eye, because the poster was designed by Kuha`o (as in Zane, as in TheCutlery)!

お元気ですか？こちらヒロはとってもよいお天気に恵まれました。こんな日にハマクア・コーストをドライブすると本当に気持ちがよいです。

さて、今日はヒロで行われるとっても素敵なイベントのお知らせです。何しろ私がヒロに初めて訪れたのもこの音楽祭の為だったので思い出のイベントです。

7月21日＆22日にヒロ・ハイスクールの講堂で開催される第18回ハワイアン・ミュージック・フェスティバル！たったの＄12で一日中最高の音楽が聴けちゃう素晴しい音楽祭です。スラックキー、ウクレレ、ファルセット、とハワイアン音楽には欠かせない音楽が目一杯聴けますよ。しかもミュージシャンが又素晴しいラインアップ。是非この時期ヒロにお越し下さいませ～♪

そうそう、こちらのイベントポスターのデザインはシグの息子のクハオがデザインしました。どっかで見たことあるレフアのお花がポイントです…
