Bon Chance, Bon Dance!

Hope your weekend was an exciting one!
Here in Hilo, it was hot and beautiful. Summer has surely arrived!
So had to go to the favorite beach spot to cool off the heat...

お元気ですか～！？良い週末を過ごされましたか？こちらヒロは良い天気に恵まれ毎日夏真っ盛り、といった感じです。そんな日々はやはり海、に限りますよね！ということで先週末はお気に入りのビーチで涼んできました…



And when cool evening arrived, I decided to check out the local bon dance situation at the Hilo Meishoin.
It's a traditional way to celebrate the o-bon period (usually in August) in Japan. It was a very pleasant surprise to see so many local people enjoying this traditional way of honoring and paying respect to your ancestors. And there were many great dancers too! A "home away from home" kinda feeling, if you know what I mean.
Here's a site where you can see the Big Island Bon Dance Schedule. It's happening throughout July and August, so if you get into the dancing, you can dance your way through the summer, almost every weekend!
This particular event was sponsored by Suisan, who is celebrating their 100th year anniversary. Wow!





そして夜はこの時期から始まる地元の｢盆踊り大会」に行くことになりました！ヒロではすっかり馴染みのある盆踊り、今週末はヒロ明照院での大会。そこにはたくさんの老若男女のボン・ダンス・ファンが集合していました！なんだか日本にいるより盆踊りの文化が継承され、しかもかなり盛り上がっていることに感動。と～っても踊りの上手な方々が大勢いるので(特にこのお兄さん)ひとしきり感心したりで楽しんじゃいました！ハワイ島の盆踊りのスケジュールは→こちら。そして今回のイベントは今年創業100年を迎えたいわずと知れたローカル漁業会社、スイサンがスポンサー、ということでこんな手ぬぐいとうちわをいただきました♪
