One Crane One Prayer from Hawaii

 Aloha Kakou! I would like to share my experience I had last week 

with some of the Japanese and local communities, on the Hawaii Community College Campus.

"Ganbare JAPAN! One Crane One Prayer", 

an origami folding event of "Senbazuru" or thousand cranes.

ハワイ島ヒロからアロ～ハ！

先週ハワイイ・コミュニティー・カレッジにて緊急に行われた

「がんばれジャパン！一羽の鶴、一つの祈り」と題された

東日本大震災の人々への願いを込めた

千羽鶴を作るイベントに参加させていただきました。

In Japan, it is believed that folding 1,000 origami cranes 

makes a person's wish come true. 

 The crane in Japan is a symbol of good luck and longevity, 

and is said to live for a thousand years.  

This makes them popular gifts at times of difficulties or happiness, 

as each crane is folded with prayers.

もちろん千羽鶴なんて知らない大学生や地元市民の人たちが

噂を聞き付け少しでも協力したいと大勢駆けつけてくれました。

日本での地震、津波、そして原子炉の問題が毎日報道される中

募金以外に何かできないだろうか？とみんなが感じていたんですね。

 The Japanese students helped to be instructors
as students and community members dropped by
upon hearing about this effort through 

word of mouth, and in my case, Facebook, of course!

日本人の留学生の皆さんが中心になって折鶴の作り方を

丁寧に教えてあげていました。
口コミで聞いた人等、私はフェースブックにて知ったのですが
とにかくたくさんの人が参加していました！

 Participants signed and wrote down messages of 

well wishes and aloha to the people of Japan.

参加してくださった皆さんには励ましの

メッセージも書いていただきました。

 Even first timer "origami folders"
were able to make these beautiful cranes!

 Here are some of the cranes that got folded while I was there. 

Eventually, I heard there were at least 3,000 cranes
that got folded in total between
University of Hawai'i Hilo and Hawai'i Community College Campuses.

ハワイ大学ヒロ校とハワイ大学付属短期大学両キャンパス内にて

同時開催されたこのイベントでしたが

最終的には3月14日から18日までの期間内で

三千羽以上の折鶴が折られたそうです！

This is Yoshie Uehara, a student at Hawai'i Community College 

who was the key force in organizing and getting this started.

 Mahalo nui loa Yoshie-san for leading the way, and

to the kind support and cooperation from the UH Hilo and Haw CC

especially the Intensive English Program Department.

especially in the devastation areas.

Praying for Japan!

 

Aloha Kakou! First of all, I would like to express my deepest sorrow and sympathy to the people of Japan. 

I pray for those who passed on and to those who are stricken in the disaster area, 

and pray for better days to come very soon.

 

ハワイ島ヒロからアロ～ハ!

3月11日に起きました東日本巨大地震におきまして
被災された皆様に心よりのお見舞いを申し上げるとともに
亡くなられた方々のご冥福をお祈り致します。

皆様が安心してすごされる日々が 早く訪れることを願っております。

 

Here in Hilo, we were fortunate enough to be able to say that there were no signs of tsunami damage.

Although, on the Kona side, there were significant devastation.

I would like to extend my sincere prayers to those who are stricken from this tsunami throughout the State of Hawai'i as well.

 

幸いにも私の住むハワイ島の東側のヒロは津波による災害はほとんどありませんでした。

ですが西側のコナでは津波の破壊による爪跡が著しく現在も復旧工事中です。

ハワイ州各島の被災された皆様へも心よりお見舞いを申し上げます。

Moonstruck Patisserie in Hilo is What's Delicious!

 Aloha Kakou!

My friend recently told me about this new place in town that has the BEST croissant 

(and she's a foodie so I trust her ratings)

and here it is, Moonstruck Patisserie!

 

 アロ～ハ!　今巷で口コミでうわさになっているのがこちら、ムーンストラック･パティセリー。

味にはうるさい友達がここのクロワッサンが一番美味しい！

と絶賛していたので早速探して行ってみました♪

 

This is Jackie, the owner and patissier or pastry chef who makes ALL the wonderful baked goods.

Her daughter Su-Hwei is the artist who painted the cafe and she helps her mom too!

こちらがパティシェ兼オーナーのジャッキーさん！全て彼女の手作りです！

お嬢さんのスーウェイちゃんは内装の壁画を手がけたアーティスト。

お店のお手伝いもしています。

 

 Some of the selections that we got to taste last night... Lilikoi Cheesecae was awesome!

昨夜の宅のデザートはこちら・・・リリコイ･チーズケーキがグッドでした！
