Hope you had a fabulous weekend!
We had a blast here in Hilo, and here's the reason why.
Aiwaiwa Party @ Sig Zane Designs!
This was to celebrate the release of Kaumakaiwa Kanaka'ole's self-titled 3rd CD, and what a happening night it was. This "closed to the public" event's highlight of course was Kaumakaiwa's performance, and here it is!
More reports will be followed but first from this glimpse into the evening of AIWAIWA...

皆様お元気ですか?
先週末の土曜日の夜、ヒロのシグ・ゼーン・デザインズで特別パーティーが開かれました！
題してＡｉｗａｉｗａ。ハワイ語でミステリー、というような意味合いを持つ言葉です。このパーティーの主役はカウマカイヴァ・カナカオレ。先月末に三枚目のＣＤをリリースしたばかりです。そのアルバムのリリースを記念したプレス・パーティーだったのですが、とっても盛り上がりました♪
先ずはカウマカイヴァの美声をこちらのビデオでエンジョイしてくださいね。

Locks of Love!!!

Aloha Everyone!
Hope your weekend is going well.
I had a great day today, as I cut my hair. Short.
It's not just a trim, but I had cut my long hair that was down below my waist, as you can see from this Before photo!
I planned this cut mainly because I needed to cut my hair, but because I wanted to donate my hair to Locks of Love! I learned about them one day earlier this year when there was a campaign for getting your hair cut for Locks of Love for free by the local hair dressers here in Hilo. Ever since then, I had my mind set on getting my very long hair donated it for a good cause (or otherwise wasted pile of hair that gets swept off the floor in a hair salon!)
And today was that day!

週末いかがお過ごしですか?
今日、と～っても長かった髪の毛をカットしてきました！
かなりすっきり・・・今までかなりのロングヘアだったので見た目、｢な～んちゃってフラ・ダンサー｣、だったのですが、これで影も形もなく｢普通の人」?!
実はショーっトカットにしたのには「動機」があったのです。アメリカには「ロックス・オブ・ラブ」、という非営利団体があり、病気などで髪の毛を失った恵まれない18歳以下の子供達にヘアー・ピース若しくは鬘を提供する活動を行っています。そこに10インチ(約26センチ)以上の長さの髪の毛を寄付することによって、その団体の活動を支えることができるのです。この活動のことを知って以来、次に髪の毛を切るときは絶対にこの団体へ寄付したい、と思っていました。
そしてついに今日その日が訪れたわけです♪

Here is Locks of Love's Mission Statement:

"Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under age 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. We meet a unique need for children by using donated hair to create the highest quality hair prosthetics.
Our mission is to return a sense of self, confidence and normalcy to children suffering from hair loss by utilizing donated ponytails to provide the highest quality hair prosthetics to financially disadvantaged children. The children receive hair prostheses free of charge or on a sliding scale, based on financial need. "
And here is my ponytail... It was at least 21 inches from top to end!

最低53センチはあった私の髪の毛がこちらです！

Wow! It's SO much lighter without all that hair behind you. And with the hot weather still continuing, I know I am going to be very happy with my new hair length!

Sharon Shroeder at Regis Hair Salon @ Prince Kuhio Plaza was very helpful in getting my new hair style going. So a big mahalo to Sharon!

髪の毛が短くなってすっきり!とにかく頭が軽い(ハハハ)のがなんといっても一番の差です。嬉しい!

プリンス・クヒオ・プラザ内のレジス・ヘア・サロンのマネージャーのシャーロンさんがとても上手くヘアースタイルのアドバイスをしてくれました。まだまだ暑い日が続くヒロなので、手入れも簡単になり大正解!と言った感じです♪

She had done a show at a seaside town of Hayama, at one of the beach side restaurants.

Kaumakaiwa Kanaka'ole!!!!

Aloha Kakou!
Howzit from Hilo, Big Island!
The weather has been really wonderful... sunny days with turquoise blue ocean and azure sky. Lucky we live in Hilo!
And what better accompaniment would it be to these natural elements of Hawai'i but to listen to the new CD release from Kaumakaiwa Kanaka'ole! This self-titled CD (his third) is out in the stores now since August 26th and guaranteed, you will enjoy it!



ハワイ島ヒロからアローハ・カコウ！
皆様お元気ですか？こちらはとっても素敵なお天気が続き、毎日青い空と青い海を拝んでいます。もちろんヒロですから雨も降りますけど、この適度な湿度がヒロの居心地のよさに貢献しているんですよね~。
ところでそんないい感じのお天気にぴったりの音楽を今日はご紹介しましょう。地元ヒロが誇るミュージシャン、カウマカイヴァ・カナカオレ。彼の最新ＣＤが8月26日にリリースされました♪

（因みにこの写真は今年の6月に日本で行われたハラウ・オ・ケクヒの「アイハア」の公演時に撮ったカナカオレ三兄弟の写真です！左から次男のウルマウアヒ、中央が三男のカウイラ、そして右がカウマカイヴァです）






I admire his great talent and courage to be able to honor his tradition, and yet be progressive and creative at the same time. And that's what you will hear when you listen to this album.
Here in this photo, he charms the audience with his solo number during his recent visit to Japan with Halau O Kekuhi.

日本にもお馴染みの方は多くいらっしゃると思いますが、ハワイの伝統をしっかり守りながら新しいものを作り上げていく才能と勇気を持ったカウマカイヴァには毎回感心させられます。今回のアルバムは本当にその彼の持ち味が上手く表現されています♪
こちらの写真は上記の公演でソロを披露するカウマカイヴァ。チャーミングなトークと美声で観客を魅了しているところです！





Also to note, is the album's cover art design. His ohana Kuha'o Zane and Kauila Kanaka'ole took charge and presented the artist with this impressive work. I love the photo of Kaumakaiwa on the cover, with the wind from the volcano blowing his bright 'olena (turmeric) yellow fabric away... Dynamic and regal!

あともう一つご注目お願いしたいのが、アルバムのカバー・アートを手掛けたのがクハオ・ゼーンとカウイラ・カナカオレ、というカウマカイヴァの親族二人である、ということです！
カバーの写真が特に良いですよね～♪背景に見えるのは火山国立公園、火山の女神ペレからの風を受け堂々とした風貌でウコン（黄）色に染められた生地を纏い立つカウマカイヴァ。彼の本質を捉えている写真ではないでしょうか？！
