MOKIF Report 2 from Miyazaki!!!

Aloha from Miyazaki!
Part of the fun about being in Miyazaki is enjoying the abundance of nature here. Sig Zane did a workshop about making haku (weaving style) lei. And we went out to an area outside the city called Darumizu, as Sig & the students got to see how local vegetation can be utilized for their lei making. We were blessed with a fine day, and as Sig did his pule (prayer) to ask for permission to to collect the plants, a beautiful black butterfly gracefully fluttered through our path. Not only that, A very auspicious sign!


宮崎よりアロ～ハ！
宮崎に居て思うのは、自然がとっても近い存在にあるということ。ここら辺がハワイから来ても「外国に来た」、という感じが余りしない点かもしれませんね。今回の宮崎ではシグ・ゼーンが初の試みとしてレイ・メーキングのワークショップを担当し教えることになりました。そこでシグは垂水という宮崎近郊のエリアへ生徒を連れ出し地元の植物を使ってレイを作る、というレッスンを行ったのです。到着後、シグは先ず自然の要素に対しプレ（祈り）を捧げました。するとその間、大きな黒い蝶が優雅に頭上を飛んで来て・・・とっても素敵なお客様、一種の御印かな？と、嬉しくなりました♪

As Sig was explaining about how to make an auana (modern) lei, a huge pinao (dragonfly) landed on his head! Another very auspicious moment during that workshop.

そしてシグがアウアナ（モダン）用のレイを作る説明をしていたときに、シグの頭上に大きなトンボが一瞬停まりました。これも又とっても素敵な御印としてワークショップに「花」を添えたのでした♪

Back at Miyazaki Kanko Hotel, Sig made a kuahu (hula altar) so that the students can make their kahiko (traditional) lei, as the presence of a kuahu makes it possible for them to be in tune with the gods.

宮崎観光ホテルに戻ってから、クアフ（フラの祭壇）のあるお部屋でお次はカヒコ（伝統的）のレイを作るレッスンが続きました。クアフの在る場所でレイを作る、ということは神に捧げるに相応しいものを作る、という意味でもあり大切なことなのだそうです。

In the evening, we attended a wonderful welcoming party hosted by our friends in Miyazaki. There, Sig presented his one and only artwork of Kalo (or Taro, a Hawaiian potato) to our friends, to symbolize our friendship, as kalo represents "family" in Hawaiian culture.

夜は歓迎パーティーに出席。そこでシグは友情、そしてお礼の印として自らのアート作品を贈呈しました。
一点物のアートに描かれているのはカロ（タロ）、日本で言うサトイモの一種です。これはハワイでは家族を象徴する植物。なのでシグは特別にこの絵を選んだのでした。

Sig is wearing the special Moku O Keawe T-shirt that he designed for this year's Miyazaki Festival.

It has the 'olelo in Hawaiian from his mother-in-law, Edith Kanaka'ole, which means "Unity in thought echoes through the sound of traditional dances."
With that deep saying, a hui hou and I will get more reports from Miyazaki!

最後はモク・オ・キアヴェ・インターナショナル・フェスティバル宮崎大会の監修を勤めるナニ・リム・ヤップ先生とシグ。
シグが着ているのは彼がデザインした特別限定のＴシャツです。シャツに書かれた言葉は彼の義理の母に当たる故イーディス・カナカオレの言葉、「思考の統一は伝統的舞踊の音に木霊する」、という深い言葉。
