To get the new year on a good healthy start,

I did something I hadn't done before

which was walking across the Honoli'i Bridge

and going to the Honoli'i Beach Park!

新年を迎え、早速新しい事をやってみました。

それは自宅から歩いてホノリイ橋を渡り

ホノリイ海浜公園へ散歩を兼ねて行ってみた事です！

I just watched the surfers riding the waves,

but it was great to be down there!

Well, a very exciting new book is

going to be out in the stores soon,

and its launch party was recently held at Sig Zane Designs.

先日シグ･ゼーン･デザインズにて新書の

出版パーティーが行われました。

The name of the book, "Ka Honua Ola"

by Dr. Pualani Kanaka'ole Kanahele

which is going to be sold in bookstores from Dec. 20, 2011.
Hilo's Basically Books has them now in the store.

Aunty Pua greeted many of the guests at the door

and the books sold-out in a matter of 30 minutes!

入り口で来客者にご挨拶をするアンティー・プア、

There were onolicious food provided by alohaMondays

and beautiful music filled the air...

美しい音楽が奏でられる中・・・

The book was conceived when Kilauea started erupting

back in 1986, and the concept of this book was borne.

From the 25 chants in the book, Aunty Pua selected chants

to be chanted by some capable guests...

1986年にキラウエア火山が噴火したことから

本のコンセプトが誕生したそうです。

そしてアンティーがゲストの中から詠唱者を指名し

本に含まれた25のチャントから

チャントが詠唱されました。

Keiki of Kanaka'ole 'Ohana chanted for us...

カナカオレ・ファミリーのケイキ達も

チャンターとして参加・・・

With some more beautiful music in between chants...

そして合間に響く美しい音楽・・・

And Dr. Taupouri Tangaro was selected to chant as well.

He is Aunty's son-in-law.

タウポウリ・タンガロー博士も詠唱しました。

彼はアンティー・プアの義理の息子でもあるのです。

シンク・ローカル・バイ・ローカル

（地元のことを考え、地元のものを買う、という運動のスローガン）の宣言式がありました。

地元地域＆ビジネス社会をサポートする
ヒロ･ダウンタウン改善団体(略してDIA)
のアリス・ムーン女史もこのスローガンの提言者です。

とても有名なハワイアン・スタイル・カフェのご紹介。

It's right across the street from Parker Square, on Kawaihae Road (Hwy 19).

And this is where Food Network's Star TV Chef,

Rachel Ray came and raved about!

こちらワイメアのパーカー・スクエアのすぐ真向かい

カワイハエ通り沿い（国道19号線）にあります。

なんといってもフードネットワークのTV番組のシェフで

全米で超人気のレイチェル・レイ女史に紹介されたほどのお墨付。

There is a U-shaped counter as you enter,

and for more than 2 persons, booth seats are available too.

入るとすぐにカウンターがあって奥には

二人以上から座れるブース席があります。

This is what I had for lunch, their Tripe Stew (Large $8.50)

with delicious Mac Salad & 2 Scoops Rice.

It was good to the last drop... Ooooo it was SO good

(especially if you love this kinda food) !!!

頂いたのはこちらのトライプ・シチュー（モツ・シチューです♪）

普通より数倍美味しいマックサラダと定番２スクープ・ライス付。

Lサイズが＄8.50でもちろん全て

たいへん美味しくいただきました～！

29th Annual Hawai'i Kupuna Hula Festival 2011!

Aloha Kakou! Last week, I got my first chance to see the

29th Annual Hawai'i Kupuna Festival at

Shearton Keauhou Bay Resort & Spa
in Kailua-Kona, Hawai'i, and had a fab time.

アロ～ハ！先週9月14＆15日にハワイ島カイルア・コナ

にて開催された恒例第29回ハワイイ・クプナ・フェスティバル

を初めて観に行くことができました!

場所はシェラトン・ケアウホウ・ベイ・リゾート＆スパ

のコンベンション･ホールです。

The Festival was held Sept. 14 & 15.

Wed 14th was the Individual Competition and

Thur 15th was Group Competition.

I only got to see the Group on Thursday but

it was great to see all the kupuna dancing away...

週中なので木曜日のグループ大会のみ観る事ができました。

水曜日はソロとホオラウレア、木曜日はグループでした。

とってもお元気なクプナ（といっても皆さんお若い!!）の

踊りを拝見しこちらも元気いっぱいになりました～！

There were 9 halau from Japan!

One of them was my friend's halau

Ka Pa Hula O Keolananilehua,

who participated in this competition for the first time.

日本からは9つのハーラウが参加！

こちらはお友達のハーラウ、

カ・パ・フラ・オ・ケオラナニレフア。

大会初挑戦で素晴らしい踊りを披露されました♪

They danced beautifully, adorned in Sig Zane Designs dress

and beautiful lei with multi-colored lehua,

they danced to the mele "Ka Lehua O Kilauea",

accompanied by Sonny Lim and Kevin Kealoha!

ドレスはシグ・ゼーン・デザインズのレフアマモ･プリント。

レイに使用されたレフアと完璧マッチした

色合いが素敵でした。

メレは「カ・レフア・オ・キラウエア」、音楽は

サニー・リムとケビン・ケアロハという強力美声デュオ。

そして見事、初参加＆初挑戦ながら

The Overall Winner was Na Kupuna O Moana

who also won First Places for the Wahine & Mixed Category,

and Thrid Place for Tutu Kane.

They are from Moloka'i. Congratulations!!

ナ・クプナ・オ・モアナでした。ワヒネと混合で一位、

そして男性ソロで三位という好成績で存在感ばっちり！

おめでとうございます!!!

So many of the Kupuna dancers were NOT like kupuna,

looking SO young and energetic!

本大会はクプナ、ということですが、とにかく

皆様本当に若々しく驚き！どこがクプナ？という感じ♪

7月13日午前（ハワイ時間）、残念ながら他界されました。

その奥深いハワイ文化への知識と

大変暖かい人柄でユーモアのセンスも抜群であっただけに

53歳という若さで逝かれてしまわれたことに

誰もがショックを隠しきれません。

Wowed by the Wa'a; Pacific Voyagers "Te Mana o Te Moana"

We had some very exciting visitors to Hilo recently!

These seven wa'a from Aoteaora/Zealand

sailed across and entered Hilo on June 16.

What a sight that was!

Ａｌｏｈａ！6月16日にアオテラオラ、又の名ニュージーランド

を出発した七隻のポリネシアン・カヌーがハワイ島ヒロ港に入港しました！

その様子を湾岸から目撃することができ、感動！

彼等に関する活動や情報は英語ですが

こちらからご確認ください！

After a several days stay and with the Official Welcoming Ceremony,

they left for Maui yesterday, June 21.

An awesome sight, so beautiful, and regal.

When I saw them leaving, I just ran and waved my aloha oe,

and a prayer for their bon voyage!!!

正式な歓迎式典が日曜日にあり、

その後数日を陸地で過ごした彼らは

次なる寄港、マウイへ6月21日に出航しました。

きれいに晴れた青い空と海を背景に

ゆっくりとヒロ港を出港する姿は

美しく、感動！思わず手を振って「アロハ・オエ！」と

心の中から叫びました！

Their plan is to sail from Kauai to San Francisco on July 10.

Amazing!!

彼等、パシフィック・ヴォヤジャー・プロジェクトの今後の予定は

7月10日にカウアイ島を出てサンフランシスコへ向かいます。

Starting from 9am, the group comprised of Keaukaha children

and residents lead by Kumu Hula Tangaro Taupouri,

gave a rousing performance filled with tradition and symbolism.

On Saturday, "Ukulele Jam" was held

at Keaukaha's Lihikai Hawaiian Cultural Learning Center.

アロ～ハ！週末はいかがお過ごしでしたか？
土曜日（4月9日）にハワイ島ヒロ、オネカハカハ海浜公園内にある
野外教育センターで「ウクレレ・ジャム」が行われたので行ってきました！

Keoki Kahumoku organized and gathered ukulele fans

to aide the victims of the recent Japan earthquake/tsunami.
Mahalo nui to Keoki for doing this!

このイベントはケオキ・カフモクが主催しウクレレを通じて
東日本大震災の義援金を募る為に開催されました。
本当にありがたいことです♪

The featured performers were Brittni Paiva, Colin John,
Sonny Lim　and Sammi Fo, above
who gave their delightful time for ukulele jamming!

A second "Ukulele Jam" benefit is going to be held April 16

At the same benefit, a group of Japanese expats gathered
to raise money for fellow Japanese citizens
by making lauhala bracelets
with messages of aloha woven into the design.

同イベントにてヒロ在住日本人「手芸部」のメンバーの皆様が
ラウハラで作ったブレスレットの販売を行いました！
売上金は全て義援金として寄付されます♪

These bracelets are $10 each, and you can get them (in Hilo)

Ukulele Jam for Japan!! April 9, 2011

The Center for Hawaiian Music Studies, Incorporated presents ‘Ukulele Jams on Saturday, April 9, 2011 from 10am-sundown at the Lihikai Hawaiian Cultural Learning Center in Keaukaha. A benefit for the victims of the tsunami in Japan, this free concert features some of the island’s finest musicians including Grammy award-winning artist Keoki Kahumoku, Brittni Paiva, Buddy and Sammi Fo, Konabob Stoffer… and you! ‘Ukulele players from beginner to advanced are invited to bring their instrument and participate in a kanikapila like no other. Start with lessons in proper jam etiquette and tuning techniques, then follow along with the aid of visuals and wandering instructors. As performers take the stage, they’ll teach attendees some of their favorite songs, from Hawaiian mele to jazz and everything in between. The list of entertainers grows daily and also includes Andy Andrews of the ‘Ukulele Club of Santa Cruz, Keone Turalde, Grammy award-winner Sonny Lim, and Colin John. This unique opportunity to learn from some of the best and make beautiful music is free and open to the public.
Participants can take advantage of free string changing for all 4-string ‘ukulele. In the market for a new ‘ukulele? Custom instruments made and donated by various ‘ukulele builders from Hawai‘i will be available for sale.
Calabash donations to aid relief efforts in Japan will be accepted throughout the day. Participants should bring their own lunch and water, along with a beach chair and of course, their ‘ukulele. If you have a favorite song, bring it along to share, too. This is a drug and alcohol-free event.

Aloha Kakou! I would like to share my experience I had last week

with some of the Japanese and local communities, on the Hawaii Community College Campus.

"Ganbare JAPAN! One Crane One Prayer",

an origami folding event of "Senbazuru" or thousand cranes.

ハワイ島ヒロからアロ～ハ！

先週ハワイイ・コミュニティー・カレッジにて緊急に行われた

「がんばれジャパン！一羽の鶴、一つの祈り」と題された

東日本大震災の人々への願いを込めた

千羽鶴を作るイベントに参加させていただきました。

In Japan, it is believed that folding 1,000 origami cranes

makes a person's wish come true.

The crane in Japan is a symbol of good luck and longevity,

and is said to live for a thousand years.

This makes them popular gifts at times of difficulties or happiness,

as each crane is folded with prayers.

もちろん千羽鶴なんて知らない大学生や地元市民の人たちが

噂を聞き付け少しでも協力したいと大勢駆けつけてくれました。

日本での地震、津波、そして原子炉の問題が毎日報道される中

募金以外に何かできないだろうか？とみんなが感じていたんですね。

The Japanese students helped to be instructors
as students and community members dropped by
upon hearing about this effort through

word of mouth, and in my case, Facebook, of course!

日本人の留学生の皆さんが中心になって折鶴の作り方を

丁寧に教えてあげていました。
口コミで聞いた人等、私はフェースブックにて知ったのですが
とにかくたくさんの人が参加していました！

Participants signed and wrote down messages of

well wishes and aloha to the people of Japan.

参加してくださった皆さんには励ましの

メッセージも書いていただきました。

Even first timer "origami folders"
were able to make these beautiful cranes!

皆さんとってもお上手！

Here are some of the cranes that got folded while I was there.

Eventually, I heard there were at least 3,000 cranes
that got folded in total between
University of Hawai'i Hilo and Hawai'i Community College Campuses.

ハワイ大学ヒロ校とハワイ大学付属短期大学両キャンパス内にて

同時開催されたこのイベントでしたが

最終的には3月14日から18日までの期間内で

三千羽以上の折鶴が折られたそうです！

This is Yoshie Uehara, a student at Hawai'i Community College

who was the key force in organizing and getting this started.

Mahalo nui loa Yoshie-san for leading the way, and

to the kind support and cooperation from the UH Hilo and Haw CC

especially the Intensive English Program Department.

Here in Hilo, we were fortunate enough to be able to say that there were no signs of tsunami damage.

Although, on the Kona side, there were significant devastation.

I would like to extend my sincere prayers to those who are stricken from this tsunami throughout the State of Hawai'i as well.

幸いにも私の住むハワイ島の東側のヒロは津波による災害はほとんどありませんでした。

ですが西側のコナでは津波の破壊による爪跡が著しく現在も復旧工事中です。

We celebrated its 9th Annual Hilo Chinese New Year Festival this past Saturday February 12.

恭賀新年！恒例第九回目となるヒロ・チャイニーズ・ニュー・イヤー・フェスティバルが2月12日土曜日に開催されました！

Here at Sig Zane Designs, the early morning was spent prepping the store for the lion's visit.

こちらシグ・ゼーン・デザインズ店では獅子舞の訪問準備の為に大忙し。

シグがドアの上に獅子に供える白菜を取り付けているところ。

This is Kuha'o, Sig's son and graphic designer, prepping the firecrackers that is going to be hung right in front of the store! Look how long it is...

こちらシグの息子でグラフィック・デザイナーでもあるクハオ君です。お店の前に吊る爆竹を用意しているんんですが、とぐろを巻いているこの長～い爆竹、すごいんです！

The lion dancing was presented by Ed Yap's Big Island Shaolin Arts Lion Dancers.

They are an awesome team of lion dancers, so exciting and animated.

獅子舞を提供したのはエド・ヤップ率いるビッグ・アイランド・シャオリン・アーツ・ライオン・ダンサーズ。とっても躍動的でエクサイティングな獅子舞なんです。

Michelle, the store owner and family looks on as the lion devours the offerings after the blessing of the store.

オーナーのミッシェルと家族が見守る中、祝福を済ませた獅子がお供え物を食べます。これが中華式の風習なんですね。

Kids just LOVE the Lion and watches through the window as it eats the cabbage that was hanging just above.

子供は獅子舞が大好き！窓越しに獅子がお供えのキャベツを食べるのを真剣に見入っています。

It was a gorgeous day in Hilo, and at Kalakaua Park. I hope King Kalakaua, who's Summer House used to be just across the street was happy to have such fun and happy festival at his place!

素晴らしいお天気に恵まれた一日。カラカウア王の夏の御用邸が王様の名前の付いたこちらの公園の真向かいにありました。王様もこんなに大勢の人でにぎわったお祭りに悦んでいただけているでしょう！

There was a Keiki Costume Contest too.

Yes, as of yesterday (Feb. 3) it's the Rabbit Year so I hope this will bring everyone prosperity and happiness, as we all deserve it!

It was a beautiful day at Volcano yesterday... blue sky and green indigenous forest and birds chirping. So peaceful up there. And when you do come up to Volcano, you can see all this beauty at the Volcano Art Center at Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village right before you go into the Hawai'i Volcano National Park.

2月3日に旧正月を迎えたハワイ島からアロ～ハ!

正式に卯年になり、皆様の繁栄と幸せをお祈りしております♪

昨日はヴォルケーノは珍しく晴天！さわやかな青空と新鮮な空気、緑豊かな森林にそこに住む小鳥達のさえずり・・・ハワイ国立公園手前にあるヴォルケーノ・ヴィレッジにあるヴォルケーノ・アート・センター、二アウラニ・キャンパスがこちら。

Right behind the Niaulani Campus building, there is a trail where you can walk through and see many of Hawai'i's endemic plants up close. It's a great experience!

ビルの裏にはハワイ固有種の植物が生息している森の一部を観察できるお散歩コースがあります。自然と触れるいいチャンスですのでぜひ歩いて森林浴をしてくださいね！

After your experience at Niaulani, then you should go to the Hawai'i Volcano National Park, see Halemaumau/Kilauea, and go to the Volcano Art Center Gallery. Check the schedule for Hula Kahiko Series so you may see a performance by a local hula halau. The stage is right near the Gallery.

森林浴ができたらお次はハワイ火山国立公園へ！キーラウエア火山があるところ、ハレマウマウ火口の噴煙が見えます。公園内入ったビジターズ・センターの奥にヴォルケーノ・アート・センター・ギャラリーがありますが、その直近くにフラ・カヒコ・シリーズのパフォーマンスが行われる舞台があるのでそこでぜひ地元ハーラウによるフラ・カヒコをごらんください。

This is the Education Coordinator, Marsha Hee, who is always willing to share her knowledge about Hawaiian culture. She is great!

And don't miss this amazing exhibition by Marian Berger, called the Living Endemic Birds of Hawaii which is now showing until March 6 at the Gallery. This is a collection of her amazing watercolor paintings of native birds found only in Hawai'i. Definitely not to be missed!

Aloha Kakou! Yes, the humpback whales are definitely here! It's such a nice thought to have when you wake up in the morning, you know that they are out there.

皆様へアロ～ハ！そうなんです、ザトウクジラがハワイ島ヒロへ今年もやってきています！

今年は12月後半ごろからやっと観測できるようになりました。やはり朝目覚めたときからクジラが海にいる、と思うだけでうれしくなってきます！

この写真では左端にクジラの頭が突き出ているのが見えるのですが・・・

The only way to see these amazing mammals are by just being patient and to look for splashes like this, and blows.

ホウェール・ワッチングをするにはとにかくじっとクジラの動きをキャッチできるように海面の様子を観測しているしかありません。そうすると、バシャーンと跳ねたり潮を吹いたりしているのが見えてくるんです!

They can be seen right outside the Hilo Bay, right outside the breakwater, and other areas along the coastline.

ヒロでは防波堤の外側や海岸沿い一帯からクジラを見ることができます♪

あけましておめでとうございます!!!

In Hilo, there are a lot of Mochi Pounding events around town towards the end of the year in preparation for the new year. This year, we went to help out the Hilo Hongwanji Temple Mochi Pounding since our Kendo Club belongs there. As you can see, it's a lot of work, but as always, when the work is shared, it becomes fun and much faster path to the goal. In Japan, we eat Ozoni during the New Year celebrations, which is a clear broth soup with mochi, so this is definitely a time to be eating a lot of mochi. How many did you eat this year!?

日系人移民の人々が受け継いだ日本のお正月文化・・・それは毎年お餅つき、という形で体験することができます！今や日本でもあまり個人、ましては地域社会の中でも行われることがなくなったお餅つきですが、こちらでは未だに大家族の居る家庭で行われたり、ヒロ本願寺のように大きなお寺で行われたり、とさまざまです。今年は我が家の子供たちが通っている剣道クラブでお世話になっているヒロ本願寺のお餅つきのお手伝いを早朝から行いました！けっこう大変な作業ですが、みんなで力を合わせれば、ということで2000個ほどのお餅が作られました。この数には鏡餅も含まれています。でも一番人気はやはり餡子入りのお餅です。「変わり餅」としてピーナッツバター入り餅、なんてのもありますが、さあ、皆様は今年はお餅は幾つ召し上がりましたか？

Mmmmmm... Nothing like the fresh ones. Thank you very mochi!!

とにかく新鮮なお餅ほどおいしいものはありませんよね。

I hope all is well with everyone and it's hard to believe it's almost time to bid farewell to 2010 in a week.

Hilo was blessed with a beautiful view of the Mauna Kea a few weeks ago.

It stands 13,796 feet (4,205 meter) and it's a dormant volcano, which last erupted about 4,500 years ago.

アロ～ハ！そしてメリー・クリスマス2010！

皆様いかがお過ごしですか？数週間前にマウナ・ケアが今年になって初雪化粧され、ヒロの町からも素晴らしい景観を拝めることができました♪

休火山であるマウナ・ケアは標高4,205ｍ（13,796フィート）で海洋底からの高さを測ると世界一高い山となります！最後に噴火したとされるのは4,500年も前・・・でもまた噴火する可能性は大いにありえるそうです！

And here is the beautiful Mount Fuji, with Lake Ashi (Ashinoko) in the foreground.

Mt. Fuji stands 12,388 feet (3,776 meter) and it is an active volcano! The last eruption occurred about 300 years ago.

そしてこちら日本が誇る霊山の一つ、富士山です！手前、芦ノ湖に映える雪化粧された富士山、箱根神社の鳥居も見えます。こちらは日本一の高さで3,776ｍ（12,388フィート）、なんと活火山です！最後に噴火したのが1707年、ということですから300年以上は経過しているんですね～。

Imu Turkey Thanksgiving 2010

Hope you all had a nice Thanksgiving... I did!!!

I know, it's already Christmas in 3 weeks (yikes!) but here is a photo documentary report of my special experience "making" imu (Hawaiian style underground oven) turkey, so here it is!

Ａｌｏｈａ！もうすでに12月、クリスマスまであと3週間ですね（汗）！さて、今日は先日サンクスギヴィング・デーのターキーを友人宅のイム（ハワイの伝統的な地下オーヴン）で作った様子をご紹介させていただきます！

First, over the hole in the ground, a pile of wood and rocks are strategically placed.

先ず、穴の上に薪木と石が火が良く燃えるように配置されます。

Preparation is everything. Ti leaves, banana leaves & stalks, etc. are some vegetation that are used.

準備が全て！ティーの葉やバナナの葉、それにバナナの茎などが使われます。

Getting the fire going so that the rocks retain heat is key to the imu oven.

火が十分に燃え石が加熱されるまで待ちます。

And in the meantime, preparation of the food! Turkey and pork butt (for the kalua pig) are the main oven items.

待機中は食材の準備。七面鳥と豚肉（カルア・ピッグ用！）などが主品です！


And after about an hour, it's ready! 待つこと1時間ほど・・・さあＯＫです！

Then, banana stalks, ti leaves are placed over the hot rocks...

そして熱く熱した石の上にバナナの茎、そしてティーの葉が置かれます・・・

Food for 5 families awaits the imu! ５家族分のターキーと食材！

And they are placed on top... そして食材は上に置かれ・・・

Banana leaves and then moistened burlap bags, tarp, and finally sand are layered on top to retain the heat and smoke.

食材の上には熱を保つ為にバナナの葉、濡れた黄麻布袋、防水シート、そして最後に砂が次々と覆われます

And you wait for 12 hours!!!! そして12時間待ちます！！！

Here it is, the next morning after all of the layers are taken off, and the foods are nicely smoked and cooked.

翌朝です。食べ物も素敵に燻製され出来上がり～！

MOKIF 2010: Ipu Heke Workshop

Aloha & Happy Friday! It's hard to believe only three weeks ago was the Moku O Keawe International Festival. Time sure flies.

アロ～ハ！ハワイはやっと金曜日を迎えました！モク・オ・ケアヴェ/インターナショナル･フェスティバルが行われてからあれからすでに３週間が経ちました。あっという間ですね！

Today, I'm going to write briefly about the Ipu Heke Workshop taught by Kalim & Kuuleialoha Smith and Palala from Kauai. As you may know, ipu heke is a traditional Hawaiian instrument that is made by putting two gourds together and is used to provide rhythm and beat during a hula kahiko performance. This was a 2 day workshop, and it's pretty amazing to think that you can make your own ipu heke just in that time!

今日は先日参加したイプ・ヘケ・ワークショップの様子を簡単にご紹介いさせていただきます。イプ・ヘケとはひょうたんを二つ合わせて作ったハワイの伝統的な打楽器で、フラ・カヒコの際に使われます。二日間かけて自分のイプ･ヘケを作ってしまう、なんてすごいですよね。先生はカリムとクウレイアロハ・スミス夫妻とカウアイ島のパララさんの三人でした。

When we went down to the beach to wash the gourds with salt water, we were greeted by a honu (turtle)! We really felt blessed! Mahalo nui honu for the aloha!

ひょうたんを塩水で’洗う為に海に行ったらなんとホヌ（亀）がちょうど波打ち際に泳いでいて、なんだかとってもハッピーな気分にさせてもらいました。亀さん、ありがとう！

It was definitely a hands-on workshop. You can see what great efforts were put in there!

実際に自分たちの手で作る、という作業をされる皆さんの奮闘振りをごらんください！

MOKIF 2010: A Day @ Mahukona

Aloha mai e Kakou!

Hope all is great with you all wherever you are! I wanted to share some of the photos from the recent Mahukona Hula Workshop which was one of the workshops offered at the annual 5th Moku O Keawe International Festival. And let me tell you, it was an awesome experience! We got a chance to visit the place of the song Mahukona which has personal ties to Kumu Hula Howard Ai, and were welcomed by this totally awesome anuenue/rainbow as we arrived (that even Kumus Howard and Olana both were totally impressed with... and it stayed with us for the entire time we were there), and to top it off, we got to learn the Mahukona Hula from Kumu Olana (with live accompaniment by none other than Uncle Howard himself singing and playing ukulele! Please check out his beautiful album Kaleihulumamo which includes Mahukona and was a 2010 Na Hoku Hanohano nominee).

Anyway, it was just so fab... Mahalo nui loa to Kumu Hula Howard and Olana!!!!

皆様へアロ～ハ！ご無沙汰しておりますがお元気ですか？先週末（11月4～7日）ハワイ島ワイコロアで開催された第5回モク・オ・ケアヴェ・インターナショナル・フェスティバルのワークショップのお手伝いをさせていただきました。「マフコナ・フラ」というワークショップだったのですが余りにも素晴らしい経験だったので写真をシェアさせていただきますね！
今回のワークショップはクム・フラ、ハワード＆オラナ・アイご夫妻のフラ・アウアナのクラス。ハワイ島コハラ地方出身のクム・ハワードが母から受け継いだ曲、「マフコナ」のインスピレーションともなった波止場、マフコナを訪れマフコナ・フラを学ぶ、というワークショップでした。実際に歌われているその土地や風景を経験し、その実体験をフラのダンサーとして踊りに反映させる、なんて素敵なんでしょう！私達がそんな期待満々でバスに向かうと、なんとマフコナ方面にハワード＆オラナ夫妻も見たことがない！と絶賛されたほど美しく、大きく、鮮やかな虹が待ち受けていたのです！これには一同感激し全員がシャッターチャンス！となりました。そしてこの虹は私達がその場を去るまでずっと消えることなく見守り続けてくれたのです。いや～、一生忘れられない虹となりました。そしてその後ホテルに戻りフラのレッスンをクム・オラナから直々に伝承していただきました（しかもクム･ハワードの生演奏付。なんと贅沢！ちなみにクム･ハワードのＣＤ「カレイフルマモ」に「マフコナ・フラ」が入ってますよ！）
ま、とにかく、そんな又とない経験をさせていただきました。クム、ハワード＆オラナご夫妻に感謝で～す！ありがとうございました♪

Summer in Japan 2010-1

Aloha Kakou! Hope all of you are having a great summer so far... I spent my whole month of July in Japan, mostly in Kamakura, working and not working. It was great to be back in the land of punctuality (as this photo shows you... train arriving as scheduled, right on the clock), lots of people, great places and great food!

Na Palapalai was at the store too and got to hear them acoustic... wonderful music filling the store. Tsunami!

The anticipated tsunami which was generated by the 8.8M earthquake off the coast of Chile was not big, but it sure did come to Hilo, Hawai'i! While looking at the TV news report of the live podcast of Moku Ola (Coconut Island), the water receded and rushed out and rushed back in, making the bay water look as though it was a gushing river.
The on-lookers were all over the hill tops with binoculars and folding chairs as they looked on to the yonder sea. Thankfully, it caused no damage and as one tsunami specialist commented on TV, it was the best kind of tsunami since it came, people could get a satisfaction at seeing a small but significant visual signs, but it caused no damage! Thank you Mother Nature for showing us the awesomeness of nature's energy and powers, and making us realize how vulnerable we are!

２月２７日の土曜日１１時過ぎにハワイ島ヒロ湾に到着予定の津波は・・・結果的にミニ津波でした！
義理の母の家は高台にあり、用事もあったついでに母の家でテレビのニュースで津波の到着を見守りました。本来は海を目の前にした絶壁にある家から津波の到着をみたかったけど・・・！
でもテレビで生中継されていたたココナッツ島（モク・オラ）を囲む水位の上昇具合から、やはり自然の力はすごい！の一言です。普段は穏やかなヒロ湾の水が一気に右へ流れ、かと思うと数分後には左へ流れ、まるで川が呼吸をしているかのような不自然な動きに沈黙・・・
兎にも角にも、なにも破壊されること無い「優しい」津波でよかった！

The Humpback Whales are here in Hawai'i!!!
And they are here in Hilo Bay too!!!!
It's so nice to hear them singing, and slapping their fins, and to see them breaching... So exciting.

The Hawaiin Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary is conducting an Ocean Count of the whales so I hope to see you all there on Feb. 27 & Mar. 27!

ザトウクジラの季節がハワイ島ヒロにやってまいりました！毎年12月から4月にかけてやってくるのです♪鯨の頭数を数えるボランティア活動を行っているのがハワイアン・アイランズザトウクジラ国立海洋サンクチュアリーという団体で毎年1月から3月の最後の土曜日にオーシャン・カウントが行われます！私はオネカハカハ・ビーチでカウントに参加する予定ですのでぜひ皆さんも立ち寄ってくださいね～!

I can't believe how fast this day has come... it's been a crazy couple of weeks but I did get a chance to enjoy Uncle Howard's Chirstimas lights the other nigh! He's got some great displays, right on the corner of Mohouli and Kaumana. The lights are on from 6pm to 9pm everynight, all the way up until December 30 (Wed.), so if you are in town (of Hilo that is), make sure to stop by and enjoy the lights.

Hamakua Music Festival Concert #2! Nov. 21, 2009

Keali'i Reichel and Halau Perform in Honoka'a
Next Saturday night at the Peoples Theatre, kumu hula Keali'i Reichel and
his award winning halau will perform in a fundraising concert for the newly
revitalized Hamakua Music Festival and the Hawai'i Performing Arts Festival.
Reichel, an internationally known teacher and performer, is also a steward
of Hawaiian culture.
When asked what he wanted people to know about the study and teaching ofHawaiian culture, he replied that Hawaiian cultural practitioners "are
becoming more and more comfortable with ourselves in the modern world, almost to the point of exclusivity. Sometimes the modern world is distracting and disrupting, so we may wall ourselves off to remain as pure as we can when it comes to Hawaiian thinking and world view. People often
ask me what I think of hula music going global. Part of me thinks it's great, but it would also be great if it never went beyond our shores. Hawaii is the epicenter; if the epicenter isn't good the ripple from the epicenter is weak."
Born and raised on Maui, Reichel's love of Hawaiian culture is lifelong. It has saved him at least once in his life. Even though he had started his own halau at age 18, he admits to being wild and "unruly" in all phases of his life. "I did some stupid things, and I get caught and convicted." When up for sentencing, the judge thought the work he had done with Hawaiian culture was important enough to keep him out of prison. As part of community service, Reichel learned discipline and to focus on what he should be doing. He came to the realization it all was supposed to happen. Thus began his devotion to Hawaiian culture that continues to this day.
Winner of numerous Hoku awards, Reichel has opened concerts for Sting, Bonnie Raitt and Lee Ann Rimes. His largest audience of 50,000 was at Aloha Stadium with Celine Dion. He chuckles and says, "The old days of performing at shopping malls are gone." He admits to a fair amount of anxiety before going onstage. "I'm basically shy and introverted. I hate those two
seconds before I perform."
His career has had its embarrassing moments. He described one memorable misstep. "I was in my 20s singing and dancing at a lu'au show at one of the hotels. The stage was four feet high, and black. I couldn't see the edge, and I stepped off that stage with a microphone, and the audience heard a loud thud, and me, in a very low voice, going 'Owwwwww'. The band started to laugh. I went back up and went on performing."
These days most of Keali'i Reichel's time is spent mentoring the young students in his halau. "We enrich and we've been enriched. It's an interesting life. We provide a window into the brilliance of our ancestors, through singing, hula, taro farming...every aspect of what we practice."

Here's what's happening Friday the 13th, 2009!
Award winning Hawaiian entertainer Robi Kahakalau will take the stage at Mauna Kea Beach Hotel Luau Grounds on Friday, November 13 at 5:30pm. The group Ka'u (with Robi's brother John Kahakalau) will perform with her. The evening of Hawaiian music and dance is a fundraising concert for the newly revitalized Hamakua Music Festival and the Hawaii Performing Arts Festival. Mauna Kea Beach Hotel is the sponsor.

Ms. Kahakalau happily agreed to perform on behalf of the festival she has visited before and remembers fondly. "I always loved the Hamakua Music Festival, where it was a real pleasure to perform. Wonderful people." She was first to sign up to help the festival, which presents a variety of diverse artists in concert and supports music education in North Hawaii.

Born and raised in Germany, Robi Kahakalau first came to Hawaii when she was 17. "I knew I was home", she said. Since then she has embraced Hawaiian language, culture, and of course, its rich music. Her father, Bob Carter, was a well known jazz bassist in the 1950s who played with Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. "At our house, Dad was in charge of the record player." She laughs as she tells the story of her dad, whose real name was Robert Kahakalau, reporting to the East Coast Musicians Union, where he was told he would never get a gig with a name like that. "He looked up at a nearby billboard, saw the name Carter, and from then on, his name was Bob Carter."

Robi started her musical career with the original Hawaiian Style Band, a group that in the early 1990s developed the genre now known as contemporary Hawaiian music. Israel Kamakawiwo'ole was also a member. In 1996 Robi won Island Contemporary Album of the Year and Female Vocalist of the Year awards from Hawaii's Academy of Recording Arts.

She has appeared at Carnegie Hall several times, the first time with Makaha and Sons. Robi's mother, who had lived in New York for a time, always joked, "When you make it to Carnegie Hall, I'll be there with you." And she
was. Robi says, "I had these little military boot-type shoes I performed in. They were my thing. My mother said, Oh, Robi, not those boots. This is such a nice and classy place.' So I agreed to wear dressier slippers. I
ended up tripping on a microphone and unplugging it, then stumbling on my way offstage. The next time I performed at Carnegie Hall, I wore my little boots, and nobody said a thing!"

Robi Kahakalau now lives in East Oahu. Speaking and performing in five languages including, of course, Hawaiian, her smooth vocals are on display every Sunday at Aloha Towers Chai's Island Bistro in Honolulu. After three
tours to Japan in the last year, she is happy to stay in one place in Hawaii where her fans can hear and meet her.

Autumn in New York Week #2 2009

Aloha Everyone!
Autumn in New York Report # 2 right here finally!
I had such a great time being there, catching up with friends and going to places that I love... never enough time to do all that but at least I got to some places. And the weather was just GORGEOUS! Loved it... very lucky!

秋のニューヨーク慕情旅行第2弾！あ～時間はいくらあっても足りないのだ！でも旧友に久しぶりに会ったり懐かしい街中を歩いたり、と短期間ながらも満喫させていただきました。そしてこの素晴らしいお天気に恵まれ、マジでラッキ～♪

Here's Marshal Williams who is a playwright and whom I worked with on the Gospel musical production of "Mama, I Want to Sing" in Japan when it first came there. He has received many awards for his efforts in the theatrical world. He hasn't changed since that time which was... Wow, about 21 years ago!

こちらマーシャル・ウィリアムス氏。日本に初来日したゴスペル・ミュージカルで一緒に仕事をしました。彼は数々の賞を受賞している非常に優秀な舞台芸術家なのです。その時以来の再会でしたが変わらずにお元気そうでした♪

Grand Central Station. This is the train to go to Larchmont, my "hometown".

こちらグランド・セントラル駅（昔はグラセンと呼んでいたな~）。この線からもう一つの故郷、ラーチモントに行きます。

And my high school girlfriends and I got together at Michael Jordan's The Steak House, underneath the Grand Central "constellation canopy". What great location for the commuters!

そして最後に又高校時代の親友とグラセンにあるマイケル・ジョーダンの経営するレストランでお食事をしました。美味しかったし眺めが良いし、通勤者には超便利なロケーション、がグッド。

And look at this view!!! Michael is a verrry lucky guy to have an office with such spectacular view.

そしてこの眺め・・・友達のマイケルのオフィスからの眺めです。こんな風景が目の前にあったら余り仕事にならないかもね♪

This restaurant, Al Di La in Park Slope was just delicious. OMG, the best Venitian cuisine I've had outside of Venice. Thank you Michael for the totally delicious dinner!!!!

今回のベストヒット・レストランの一つはこちら！アル・ディ・ラはイタリアン・ヴェニス料理。ブルックリンのパーク・スロープにあります。かなりお勧め。マイケルに感謝。ごちそうさまでした～！

Another Park Slope favorite, Blue Apron Foods. Cute little neighborhood gourmet deli, loaded with quality cheese and other goodies. Yummy...

パーク・スロープのもう一つのお気に入りはこちらのグルメ・デリ、「ブルー・エプロン・フーズ」。こんなデリがヒロにあったら毎日通って破産だね＄！

Autumn in New York Weekend 2009

It's been a while I know, and what have I been up to lately? Well, I went from a gorgeous weather in paradise = Hilo, Hawai'i, to a wet and chilly weather in Larchmont, New York!

Aloha!　ご無沙汰です♪　最近なにをしていたかって、実はハワイ島ヒロのこんなゴージャスなお天気から雨降りのさむ～いニューヨークのラーチモントという
私の育った「故郷」へ高校卒業30周年の同窓会へ出席する為に戻っています！

There was a very good reason for that... I came back to my hometown, Larchmont where I grew up, to attend the 30th High School Reunion with my Mamaroneck High School Classmates (and stop counting the years ya'll!!)

And here we are at Larchmont Yacht Club for the 30th Reunion! It was a blast. It was so good and I was so busy catching up that I forgot to take any photos!

仲良し4人組がラーチモント･ヨット･クラブにて集結。余りにも楽しかったので写真魔の私もしばしカメラのことは忘れました！

And of course, one night just wasn't enough to catch up with all so we got together at Chat 19 for Sunday Brunch and had another fabulous time catching up with each other and making new found bonds.

そして次の日の日曜日もブランチに同級生と集結。又もや楽しい時があっという間に過ぎました。３０年経ったとは思えないほど。

Afterwards, my friends took me to a nostalgia drive through Larchmont, taking me to all the places filled with memories, and it was gorgeous!

そして思い出一杯のノスタルジア･ドライブに友達が連れてってくれました。この時期ニューヨークの紅葉はやはり最高！

And this is my Alma mater, Mamaroneck High School. the same school as Norman Rockwell (the artist) and Matt Dillon (the actor).

これがママロネック･ハイ･スクールで～す！
俳優のマット･ディロンは後輩だよ～ん。

My friends came to the train station to see me off to NYC, my next destination!

And here I am now in Park Slopes, Brooklyn. My friends, Michael and Amy who are awesome cook hosts!

And today I went to Sweet Melissa's and had a Champagne Tea... it was simply delicious.

What was Aloha Yokohama Festival 2009 like?

This is what my latter half of my July looked like!
Yup, Kilauea Volcano (concept & design by yours truly Sig Zan e!) and made by Nihon Stag e... specifically, for Aloha Yokohama Festival!
Although it was CHO (super) humid and sticky, all the fun was worth it!!!!!

Aloha Everyone!
The Bon Dance Season has started for the Summer 2009! I went to the Papaikou Honganji Bon Dance last weekend, and it was fun as usual with lots of people and dancers.

アローハ!
皆様お元気ですか?先週末パパイコウ本願寺で行われた盆踊り大会に行って参りました♪ハワイでは夏になると盆踊りが殆ど毎週末のように行われ、地元民にとっての夏の風物詩＆集いの場所となっています。

Adults, teenagers, and children all enjoyed the good fun.

Our yukata manufacturer friends in Japan, "Haloa", makes these beautiful one of a kind Sig Zane Designs original yukata. This one is the 'Iwa'iwa print in black and charcoal fabric. This, of course, is the one and only yukata in the universe in this fabric... forgive me for bragging!!!
